Creativity - The Voice of the Soul

Canvases sprinkled with bright colors, fanciful sculptures and songs that take our breath away….often times people think of creativity as belonging to the artists of the world and not to everyone, but creativity is the voice of the soul, and must be heard. The creative muse that lives within each one of us beckons that we respond to its call, and when we do, our reward is an injection of self-esteem, energy and joy. To live a creative life is to live with passion. Creativity comes in many forms and each person embodies his or her own creative expression. Your creative expression may not lead you to becoming a superstar, but it will enrich your life.

To find your creative calling, take a quiet moment to recall the things that bring you joy. Remember back to when you were a child - what did you love to do? What could you get lost in? Often times our creative muse was abandoned in childhood for more practical things, such a preparing for a real profession.

Comments such as, “That’s a waste of time” “Do something useful” or “That isn’t going to get you a job” are often enough for us to lock our creative desires behind closed doors and adopt the belief that to enter the successful adult world is to focus on practicality and job training. The price we pay is a dulling of our exuberance for life. Go back to those childhood memories and unlock the door. Get back in touch with what made your inner child happy and alive.

What do you do today that so captures your attention that the hours sneak by without being noticed? Some people might say, well that sounds like watching TV or searching the Internet – and I guess that it does. But the important part of the creative equation is that when you are finished with your creative activity you feel energized, excited, happy, content or fulfilled. You feel that you have accomplished and created something that makes you smile inside.

It may be that you love to cook or bake, to clean and rearrange your home, to garden or write, draw or paint. Maybe you love to play music, put on make-up, dress in fabulous clothes or tinker with engines and bring old lawn mowers back to life. You may find joy in drawing in the sand, arranging shells you found on the beach, making a collage or singing in a choir. Creative energy comes in numerous delightful forms, each of which brings joy to the spirit.

You know you are being creative when:
You are actively doing something – participating in life
You love what you are doing
            It brings you joy
When finished you feel good about what you have created

When you are feeling down, remember what brings you joy and do it. It doesn’t have to be big or mean anything to anyone else but you and it doesn’t have to cost money or take a lot of time. Participating in a creative act is some of the best medicine for lifting the spirit and increasing the energy flow.

"We are all creative, but by the time we are three of four years old, someone has knocked the creativity out of us. Some people shut up the kids who start to tell stories. Kids dance in their cribs, but someone will insist they sit still. By the time the creative people are ten or twelve, they want to be like everyone else." -- Maya Angelou
